The only drug that has stopped the new coronavirus from replicating is interferon. But scientists fear that the dose required is too toxic to be safe.

In all, Fort Detrick will be screening more than 800 drugs on the market, including 40 anti-virals used to treat AIDS, herpes, hepatitis and influenza. Finding an effective treatment among that group would be the best-case scenario because the drug could be used immediately.

But none seems promising so far.

Scientists are planning to test at least another 1,500 drugs that are under development in laboratories.

Could there be a genetic clue to why some people get really sick and other's don't, some predisposition that might provide a clue to treatment? And when they say they've only find traces of coronavirus in 40% of the patients, do they mean this particular coronavirus? Could different strains be easily mistaken?

They may also recombine with other viruses. Jahrling thinks that scientists world-wide have been too quick to discount the possibility of a co-infection -- the coronavirus operating in concert with another agent.

Peter B. Jahrling is the chief scientific adviser to USAMRIID.

Is there a link to a list of sites that we can not post full articles from? Now that FR is becoming one of the premier sites on the net for news I would like to give the F'en Washington Compost and the F'en Latrine Time the F'en shaft. And not post their crap.

It sounds like if scientists and doctors finally figure out what makes the SARS virus "tick" and how to stop it, they may learn things that can be applied to treating other diseases.

I hope so but with this virus it is more the case the closer they are to knowing something about it the farther they are from knowing ANYTHING about it. It is a case of if you do not like what they are saying they know about it, stick around the info will change.

I find it interesting that authorities have turned to Ft. Detrick, Maryland - our premiere government bio-warefare facility for answers.

"Oil of Oregano". It kills bacteria, viruses and fungi on contact. Non-toxic. Active ingredient is "carvacrol" (63% is a good number). Referenced in the Bible (Lev. 14; Num. 19:6,18; Psa. 51:7).

A few drops under the tongue, or in juice, or inhaled via a cotton cloth imbued with a few drops, over the nose and mouth.

Google search = "oil oregano scott".

That's why shutting down these programs, an idea liberals would fawn over, is asinine.

Significant biowarfare protection research is conducted there. Now, what does that suggest about SARs' potential?
